Alternative Methods

Laser Hair Transplants

Recently, laser hair transplants were largely marketed as the leading procedure. This method has been abandoned by many surgeons because of its low efficiency rate. Besides, patients were suffering from undesirable side effects, such as extensive post-operative swelling and persistent scabbing.

Scalp reduction

The principle of scalp reduction is similar to that of a face-lift: one part of the bald surface is removed and the scalp area that is under tension is closed in. This type of intervention is no longer frequently used. There are too many problems associated with the covering of grafting scars and hair orientation.

Flap technique

The flap technique consists of sliding a strip of scalp to the new forehead line. This technique requires a major and painful surgery with the risks of serious complications. Problems are also experienced with hair orientation and distribution.

Hairpieces

Hairpieces must be replaced every 18 months. After a few years, if you factor in maintenance costs, it will have cost you more than the hair transplant procedure, which gives durable results. However, the hairpiece represents a viable alternative for persons who cannot benefit from a follicular micrograft because of low donor areas.

Rogaine

The Rogaine (Minoxidil) method is an efficient solution, but it is tedious and the results do not reflect the efforts required. Furthermore, if you stop the treatment, all benefits are lost and it’s back to square one. (90% of patients stop using it after 10 months). The treatment must not be interrupted to obtain consistent results.

Propecia

Propecia (finasteride) is a medication which can stop hair loss and sometimes, induce new hair growth. It is meant for men only. It is necessary to take the medication every day, and some side effects may occur. During your meeting with the surgeon, he could inform you on the pertinence of the medical treatment as well as its possible side effects.
